City Council Elections General Information

The City Secretary serves as the Elections Administrator for the City of Palestine. The governing body of the city will consist of a mayor and six council members and shall be known as the "City Council of the City of Palestine." The Mayor is elected at large in an odd-numbered year and in each even-numbered year, council members shall be elected from Districts 1, 3, and 5. In each odd-numbered year, council members shall be elected from Districts 2, 4, and 6. City Council shall serve for a two-year term.

The regular city election shall be held annually in May, at which time officers will be elected to fill those offices which have become vacant that year. The city council shall fix the hours and place for holding such election.

Mayor Qualifications

  • Must be a resident citizen of the City of Palestine
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be a qualified voter of the State of Texas
  • Must be a resident of the City of Palestine for a period of not less than 12 months immediately preceding the election

Council Member Qualifications

  • Must be a resident citizen of the City of Palestine
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have been a resident of the City of Palestine and district for which they are running, for a period of 12 months immediately preceding the election
  • Must be a qualified voter of the State of Texas

Filing for Mayor / Council

The Candidate Packets include the application necessary to file for office. A calendar is also included in the packet and will give you dates and deadlines for specific activities.
