Election Information
City Council Elections General Information
The City Secretary serves as the Elections Administrator for the City of Palestine. The governing body of the city will consist of a mayor and six council members and shall be known as the "City Council of the City of Palestine."
The Mayor is elected at large in an odd-numbered year and in each even-numbered year, council members shall be elected from Districts 1, 3, and 5. In each odd-numbered year, council members shall be elected from Districts 2, 4, and 6. City Council shall serve for a two-year term.
The regular city election shall be held annually on the first Saturday in May, at which time officers will be elected to fill those offices which have become vacant that year. The city council shall fix the hours and place for holding such elections.
Mayor Qualifications
- Must be a resident citizen of the City of Palestine
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be a qualified voter of the State of Texas
- Must be a resident of the City of Palestine for a period of not less than 12 months immediately preceding the election
Council Member Qualifications
- Must be a resident citizen of the City of Palestine
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must have been a resident of the City of Palestine and district for which they are running, for a period of 12 months immediately preceding the election
- Must be a qualified voter of the State of Texas

HB 305 - Internet Posting Requirements for Political Subdivisions
On September 1, 2019, House Bill 305 became effective. This bill requires that a political subdivision with the authority to impose tax, that maintained a publicly accessible Internet website at any time on or after January 1, 2019, be required to post on its website the following information:
- The political subdivision's contact information, including a mailing address, telephone number, and email address;
- Each elected officer of the political subdivision;
- The requirements and deadlines for filing for candidacy of each elected office of the political subdivision which shall be continuously posted or at least one year before the election day for the office;
