The Palestine Main Street is a nationally recognized program of the City of Palestine.
Palestine's downtown, like most small Main Street Texas Cities, was the center of commercial and retail activity for almost a century. Starting in the 1950's a number of our buildings were "slip covered" hiding the turn of the century architecture, and many businesses relocated to the loop leaving Main Street vacant and deteriorating.
Since 1986, Palestine Main Street has utilized a proven method of preservation and revitalization, the Main Street Four-Point Approach. By relying on a dedicated advisory board and numerous committees, Palestine Main Street has been instrumental in preserving our heritage and revitalizing the Main Street area.
The Main Street Four-Point Approach has four areas of concentration:
Economic Restructuring works to encourage new businesses to open in the district and find ways for existing businesses to grow and evolve;
Organization provides interaction to stakeholders to build on our successes;
Design provides opportunities and education for historically correct rehabilitation and, through the Texas Historical Commission, free design assistance; and
Promotion creates imaginative, fun and educational programs to attract residents and visitors.
Through the efforts of these volunteers, private businesses and non-profit groups, the vitality is returning to the Palestine Main Street. From coffee shops to boutiques, antiques to live theatre and music, Main Street offers a unique blend of historic and modern atmosphere.
